Air Sealing and Attic Insulation

Air Sealing and Attic Insulation are important steps to separating the attic air from the conditioned air in your home.

Puffin Mechanical provides Air Sealing and Attic Insulation services that insulate your attic floor and attic access to keep the attic air where it belongs. Why seal and insulate to keep the air from flowing between your home and attic? It saves energy and money, and it keeps moisture and dust from coming into your home. In addition, you don’t want to spend money heating or cooling your home just to have it go into the attic!

    Air Leakage in Your Home

We know that air leakage is the single biggest cause of home performance problems, driving your energy bill up.

    What is air leakage?

It’s a cycle that occurs when outside air enters your home and the conditioned air in your home escapes through gaps and openings. It is something you want to minimize for both your comfort and your wallet. If your home is not properly sealed and insulated, the conditioned air you paid to heat or cool your home escapes and is replaced by unwanted hot or cold air from outside. Then your HVAC system works harder to heat or cool that new air entering your home.

It’s a vicious cycle, but we can help!

How can we determine how much air your home is leaking?

We do this by performing a Home Performance Test using a Blower Door Test and an Infrared Camera. This takes the guesswork out of your air loss and shows the steps you can take to prevent the leaks. You may already know that your attic insulation is old and ineffective, and your access door needs to be insulated. Whether you already know, or we perform the tests, Puffin Mechanical can seal up those leaks and put in new attic insulation.

What to Expect During Air Sealing and Attic Insulation

Puffin Mechanical performs the service with a 3-step approach.

First, we do an attic cleanout by removing the old insulation. This includes vacuuming any loose fill insulation and debris to completely expose a clean attic floor throughout.

Second, we air seal all gaps and penetrations, and if needed, we install ventilation baffles.

Third, we insulate the entire attic space to a proper level of insulation. This includes insulating the pull-down attic stairs and attic hatches.

Why is Air Sealing and Attic Insulation Important?

Your home is a big investment in terms of both money spent and in the amount of time you spend living your life. It should be a clean environment where the dust, air particles, and moisture do not come into your living space. Also, the clean cooled, or heated, air should stay in your living spaces, keeping your family comfortable.

What Happens When Puffin Mechanical Seals and Insulates Your Attic?

From start to finish, our job is to remove, seal, and replace while leaving your attic and home clear of debris.

    Steps

    1. Schedule Your Appointment

Give us a call fill out our request form. We will schedule your appointment, let you know what you may need, and the next steps. (757) 230-4681

    2. Work Proposal for Air Sealing and Attic Insulation or a Home Performance Test

As mentioned before, you may already know your attic needs to be sealed and new insulation installed. If you don’t, then we can schedule a Home Performance Test to identify your home’s specific air leakage. Either way, we will present you with a proposal for the work to be done. Once approved, we will schedule your service.

    3. The Work Begins!

Our team will lay drop cloth and prep your home to avoid any damage to your flooring or home. Then, we begin your attic cleanout, so we can expose a clean attic floor. We remove the insulation and vacuum using a 23 HP machine that collects insulation and debris into a vacuum bag, making it easier and cleaner to throw away. Additionally, this cuts out the mess of loose insulation getting into your home or in the yard.

Please note, some jobs may require us to place a dumpster on the street or in your driveway the day before. If this is necessary, we will discuss this in advance.

    4. Air Sealing the Gaps

Now that your attic floor is exposed, we can identify the areas that need air sealing by filling in the gaps and penetrations. If you have soffit venting, we will install ventilation baffles, so we don’t block ventilation grilles in the soffit with the loose fill insulation. This allows for proper ventilation in attic.

    5. Install Attic Insulation

Now that your attic is sealed from air leaks, we insulate the entire attic space to a proper level of insulation. Your attic access will also be insulated. If your home has pull-down attic stairs, we will install an attic tent, but if it has an attic hatch, we will insulate the door with custom foam board.

Puffin Mechanical uses either Owens Corning fiberglass insulation or cellulose insulation from Carolina Precision Fibers. We use a gas powered Krendl insulation blow machine to spray our loose-fill insulation.

    6. Clean Up

Once the air sealing and attic insulation is complete, we clean up and remove our drop cloths. The insulation and debris from your attic are either removed from your property by our team, or they are placed in the dumpster. If it’s the later, our office will schedule the dumpster removal.

    7. Post Blower Door Test

If the air sealing and attic insulation was performed after a Home Performance Test, our office will reach out to schedule a post Blower Door Test. This 2nd Blower Door Test is the test out and takes an hour or less to perform. The quantifiable information detailing your home’s improved performance shows us what you qualify for in eligible rebates.
